Happy Thursday! In this issue of the Animation Obsessive newsletter, we’re looking at three films released in the year 1960 — from three different countries.
Animation has always been international. Even back in 1960, you could find it all over the world. And artists brought their own local perspectives to the work — their animation was influenced by the times, the creative philosophies in the air, the conditions on the ground. That was true in America, Britain, France and more.
Today, we’re seeing how this informed the modernist horror film La Peau de Chagrin (Yugoslavia), the jazzy satire The Interview (United States) and the groundbreaking experiment The Clever Ducklings (China). Looking at them together sheds a lot of light, sometimes in surprising ways, on the artists and cultures of each country.
Enjoy!
