On Love

Happy Thursday! In this issue of the Animation Obsessive newsletter, we’re diving into a piece of animation from Ireland. It’s called On Love — and it comes from the plucky studio Cartoon Saloon (Wolfwalkers).

On Love is among Cartoon Saloon’s most unique, ambitious and underrated projects. The truth is that not enough people have seen it — it’s a sequence buried in the larger film The Prophet (2014), which wasn’t a hit. But Cartoon Saloon’s work here deserves serious attention.

While On Love is short, it has a huge impact on you as a viewer. There’s an equally huge story behind this little sequence, with plenty of fascinating, important lessons about art and business along the way. Co-directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart made something gorgeous here, despite the steep challenges involved.

Below, we tell that story, delve into the production art and let you watch On Love itself. There’s a lot to explore. Enjoy!
