A beautiful tribute and reflection. I hope in the future you are able to give similar length and depth to The Cybernetic Grandma / Kybernetická babička! ^^
Thanks so much -- this means a lot coming from you! And we're definitely planning to do more Trnka coverage down the line, and we've already stumbled across quite a bit of material on Cybernetic Grandma, so we'll keep that film in mind.
thanks so much for another fantastic post! I always look forward to your posts dropping into my inbox. I wrote about The Hand and other Czech animation for my final year dissertation at Glasgow School of Art... a few ... ahem.... decades ago!! It was great to revisit and learn more about it.
Haha, thank you! This is super kind. Writing about The Hand is a tradition at this point, and one we're happy we can contribute a little to. The film (unfortunately) doesn't seem to be getting any less relevant in today's world, but hopefully its statement can keep inspiring people.
Glad to hear more good news coming out of international animation this week. Also, Studio Pocnoc is already a decade old?! It felt like yesterday when they were first established.
On a side note, The Mourning Children looks absolutely gorgeous!
We're so excited about The Mourning Children! It's by the director of Princess Arete and In This Corner of the World, and even just the teaser is phenomenal. Hoping to catch that WIP preview when we're at Annecy this year -- we'll see!

Yay! Thank you - exciting to read! As ever, please keep up the wonderful work! :D
I haven't watched The Hand since animation school. Thanks for helping this masterpiece bubble back up in my brain!
Happy to shine a spotlight on it! This is absolutely an evergreen film -- we've come to appreciate it more and more with time.
This was a very interesting read, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! Really appreciate the kind words.

Thanks for this interesting article & the embedded link! I never heard of it before.
Really happy we could introduce you to the film and its story! It's one we love, for sure.
Joey from WAC here: What a great stop-motion film! I'm reminded of another great Czech animator, Jan Švankmajer. Such craft!
Glad to share it! And Švankmajer is an icon -- he was a contemporary of Trnka's and is still alive (at 90). Incredible to think about.
Love it!
