Another great post. It always startles me the amount of effort we don’t see in animation. When I go to talks and discussions around animation this always seems to blindside me, and it has again. Thank you for sharing these insights.
Thanks so much -- it really is incredible how much thought an animator has to put into this work. The process was even more complicated in the era when Miyazaki wrote this, back when you needed paper "dope sheets" and reels of physical film (among many other things). It's mind-boggling to consider.
Thank you, this is a fabulous explanation of how to animate running. Wish someone had taught me like this in college (I graduated in animation film design). Would have surely understood the concept better!
So excited you guys covered this story! Finding Rebekah's translation on Twitter felt like a hidden gem, and now I'm discovering the essay portion from you guys! Thanks for putting these together for me!
Happy to help! It's awesome to be able to piece together this puzzle thanks to Rebekah's work. We had a hard time grasping what Miyazaki meant in his essay until now -- but combining it all really makes it click.

Wow, thanks so much! We're fortunate that Miyazaki was so clear and detailed in his writing about this.
