valley of white birds was busifan??? how did i miss that!! i just came across it on wolf smoke's youtube channel but that explains so much haha, no wonder it was so good. cannot wait for his new film to be translated @.@

the hellboy stuff is really juicy, great advice on shot framing that i fully intend to steal. thank you again for writing, you always bring something fascinating!

Thank you so much! And yeah, Busifan co-directed Valley of White Birds with Cloud Yang, the co-founder of Wolf Smoke. According to Chinese outlets, it was originally really wordy (in true Busifan fashion) but Wolf Smoke cut all the dialogue, which changed the vibe a bit away from something like Mr. Miao or Dahufa. Still a stunning film visually.

The Hellboy guide pages are fascinating, thank you so much for sharing them! The confined space in the composition moving through to a wider space is so good. I hadn't thought about how different composition is in graphic novels compared to the set size of a screen in animation/film. Using scenic elements to give that feeling and shape of panels is going to be knocking around in my head for a while now!
