That video is a definite standout of the year. Its director was also behind the series Samuel, which is on Netflix -- really recommend that one as well.
So glad you enjoyed them! That AC-bu video is really fantastic -- it doesn't seem to have sparked a ton of discussion outside Japan, but it's one of our favorites from the group in years.
Still the best newsletter I could pick to support on Substack. The originality and depth of yout research is what amazes US, your pieces are always interesting to read!
Enjoy some well deserved resting days (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*.✧ Really looking forward to dive into everything linked here as soon as I have time, there's more than enough to bridge the gap until you guys are back!
Thank you! And it's always our hope that the recaps give folks plenty to read in the meantime -- we know that some issues slip through the cracks for some readers, and that not everyone has a chance to thoroughly go over everything as it's released.
Thanks so much for all the insights and the pure love of animation that we all share with you. It’s been awesome discovering and rediscovering so many films and deep diving into them all. Still have a few to catch up on, but they will be read for sure! There was also a beastie boys sabotage music video that was all done by hand with paper cut out animation that I feel I might have seen here, but otherwise, if not, that I’m sure you would all love!
It's fantastic to read this -- thank you! Very happy you've been enjoying the newsletter. Thanks as well for the tip about the Sabotage video. That one's new to us but super impressive, and seeing that there are 79 behind-the-scenes videos for it is incredible. Will save this one back for future reference!
Thanks very much! Working on the newsletter is a delicate line to walk: most articles demand long hours, but it's also a marathon, so we have to be careful not to push too hard and burn out. We're still in the process of finding the perfect balance!
It's satisfying to pursue stories in your sphere of interest. Shaping the results into an engaging story is an art of its own.
This has a shadowy parallel to the process of (fictional) story creation. I say this as one who creates fictional narratives outside the world of Manga-Anime.
The ton of work that goes into this amazes me; one of my favorite Substacks! Thank you for sharing 🙏
Ah, thanks so much -- so happy you're enjoying!
Thanks for your great work, guys!
Really appreciate it! We’ll be back with another issue pretty soon — it’s been a nice and productive break!
So much wild imagination oozing in this article: ‘it stings a little though’.
I’ll need to come back to finish looking through this.

Thanks! Something to watch this evening 🍿
Your short film suggestions are much appreciated 👌
I especially loved the AC-bu’s MV. The direction is very striking.

Thanks so much! And happy to give Smear Frame a mention -- you're doing great work over there.
Thank you so much for an amazing first half of this year, and for these awesome shorts recommendations! Enjoy your much-deserved break!
Thank you -- always appreciate the kind comments! We're excited to take a breath and get some more research done.

Congrats on this huge milestone! And thank you both for all the love & dedication that goes into each edition and each story! 🙏🏽
Thank you, Soo! This is so kind -- really appreciate it.
Wow - that's a lot of dedicated work. I am reminded that it isn't always sufficient to do 'just enough'.
