Really fun article. Always enjoyed the variety of themes that Satoshi Kon's films explored and it sort of seems that lots of those themes has become more prevalent in recent years. Also really enjoyed the pick for the indie spotlight A Gum Boy, very striking and the effect created by using water colour gave the film a very tangible feel.

A Gum Boy is so much fun -- happy to hear that you liked it, too! And thank you for the kind words about the article! You're right that Kon's themes have become more prevalent, and we'd speculate that it's in no small part because of Kon's own influence.

Great issue as usual! (An aside: sometimes I wish I could highlight and comment directly in the post, a la Medium; still one of their best features IMO—feels much more organic and informal).

Anyway the "Hana chews out Gin" sequence is so expressive! In some ways I found the line work more compelling than the final. Seeing them running simultaneously makes for a super interesting experience in itself.

Also absolutely loved "A Gum Boy," grateful to have gems like this surfaced more broadly—incredibly inspiring stylistically—thank you!

Thank you, and had a feeling that you might like A Gum Boy! We love that film's audacity.

With linework-to-final comparisons, they can be weird like that -- it's not always the case, but there's something about raw lines that can feel more expressive than a finished and polished scene. Some of the pencil tests we share on Twitter are actually far more exciting than the animation looks in its final form! Definitely an odd phenomenon.
