This has to be one of the greatest stories on networking that I’ve ever read! And for such a laborious yet gorgeous branch of animation! It’s truly inspiring!
Thanks so much! It's hard to imagine how much audacity and persistence it took for Chartrand to do all this. Things were very grim for Petrov when she entered the picture. We love stories about animators influencing each other across borders, and this is one of the coolest we've come across.
What a story! I feel such stories can’t occur but in Russia!
And oh Petrov the genius artist i wish he make more and more films, each frame he draw is a masterpiece, the world would’ve been better if had the right finance, if he were able to make longer films, nevertheless he already made a beautiful world in his shorts!
And Chartrand you’ve done a very well job indeed!
Animation obsessive, do you think you’ll be able to interview the man himself? I wish you can.
It's pretty wild! We were amazed as we looked into the ties between Chartrand and Petrov -- so cool. And we're not sure whether a Petrov interview will be possible, but we aren't opposed to the idea if the chance arises in the future!
Now, that's just a great story. When I saw Black Soul I thought I maybe saw some Petrov influence but to think the two artists were so close! And if it weren't for her we maybe never would have gotten The Old Man and the Sea?? It's better than fiction!
Really glad you enjoyed! It's honestly one of the great friendships/crossovers in animation, and one whose details we only started to understand recently. Chartrand truly moved heaven and earth to make this stuff happen. Super pleased that we could tell the story in this issue!
We'd love to see another painted film from her -- not sure if she's working on one at the moment or not, but the world needs it. Hopefully she has the NFB's backing again if she chooses to make another.
Whoa! I love this piece so much!!! And painting on glass, what a great technique, and so cool to see the clips of their hands in action. Thank you so much for this story!

I wish, as it seems his interviews are very limited! Always very humble and short.
Still this's preserving his mysterious aura!

Honestly, this newsletter astonishes me regularly with its depth—and I especially loved this edition.
That's extremely kind -- thank you! It means a lot.
To me, Martine has taken all of the technique and flair that Petrov has and added humanity and emotional depth. She's an all time great.

much love x
