Hello! This is Ujwal, I wrote and directed Lucky Dog. Thank you Ravi for your kind words and thank you Animation Obsessive for the shoutout! I hope the film comes to a festival near you soon :)
Love reading the background of Teen Titans. It was one of the shows I really enjoyed growing up, and I think everything they set out to do (being iconic, having recognizable archetype characters, relatable plotlines) they were able to achieve! That's why the show is so memorable for me and my peers.
As somebody who quite grew up with Teen Titans (and occasionally watch the GO version), thanks a lot for this article.
I like a lot that idea of imagiging characters in a group as simple colours, as it creates a lot of room for interactions and character development. In the end, even if the series visually grew a bit old, the characters are still memorable and likeable. That's what I like a lot about this band.
Anyways, I don't have much interesring to write, I mostly wanted to thank you for writing good stuff about my childhood heroes. I love your articles and passion for animation. Thanks!
Thank you for this super kind comment! We're fascinated by the simplified character idea ourselves. This show did it well and it's usable in so many other kinds of stories -- it can be a powerful writing tool. Very happy you enjoyed the piece (and our other work here!).
I've mainly heard stories of shows which fought S&P and got away with it - kinda refreshing to hear that you can work with Standards and Practices and still make something really cool!
It seems like it can vary era-by-era in terms of how difficult S&P is to deal with, but definitely, it's nice to see a positive story for once. The Titans writers even sometimes found themselves unsure about the age-appropriateness of their own work and got the S&P greenlight anyway. Sounds like it was pretty relaxed compared to the all-out war that BTAS was involved in!
such a great read! i love their whole approach of writing the characters to be more grounded and relatable, that’s what made them so iconic. and i’m a sucker for cool designs and sketches!
Thank you -- so glad you liked it! The old interviews with the show's writers are seriously goldmines. They went into such clear detail on all of their process and thinking, and it's awesome to be able to bring some of those insights out into the open again.
“Lucky Dog” looks great !…I’m a big fan of Jacques Demy’s films & the trailer reminded me of his work.
Also, great economic style in the design.
We liked the style of that one! Hopefully we'll get the chance to watch the whole thing for ourselves soon.

There's a real appeal to this series -- it's one we remember fondly too. Glad you enjoyed the piece!

for sure, as someone who wants to create his own show, getting to look at this stuff and see the whole process take shape just means the world.
Wishing you luck with your project. It always makes our day to hear that the newsletter is helping artists in some way!
It was so good I loved this.
Loved reading this. It was amazingly explained.
