Another great post. I always think back to the first Disney films (like Snow White) and the skill and ability animators would have needed. Although, fast forward to present day, the labour intensity may have diminished the quality and attention to detail is amazing. I love it when kids in my own class are inspired by animation, wherever we draw it from for the next generation to develop. Thanks again for an excellent post.
Thanks for this awesome comment! The point about attention to detail is very true -- especially taking into account Disney's 3D films from the 2010s. We really feel that Disney's 3D animators have been, at their best, pretty much the best in the world at conveying the personalities and mannerisms of CG characters. It may not take the same tools as the old days, but a lot of incredibly talented people still work at Disney.
so cool to see digital composite get a shout out here - it's one of the areas of the pipeline I know next to nothing about, yet obviously has such power (as seen in this sequence!)
Compositing is something we need to cover in more detail. Now that pretty much everything is digital, it makes or breaks a lot of current animation -- but it's still a job that doesn't get headlines. We'll look into it!
Although adults want Disney animation with their children. Children prefer a certain level of reality I would not criticize Disney for making their cartoons. Understandable. When animation gets too abstract, some kids don’t like that PS I taught elementary school art for 30 years just try and get a kid to draw some thing abstract. When we’re talking about the second grade to fifth grade age group. It ain’t easy, they like reality. Most just have not acquired the skills to draw reality themselves.
My favorite email so far! I loved this sequence since the first time I saw it and still revisit it a lot. Just love this type of style, wish Disney would experiment more. Thanks for sharing this and hope to see more Disney animation analysis, hopefully of older classics like Treasure planet, Atlantis and Lilo and Stitch.
Thank you so much! That's great to hear. We're definitely hoping to write more about Disney in the future -- Lilo & Stitch, for one, is a big goal for us.

Such a rad style! Would love to see more of that.
For sure! A whole film with this look, even a short, would be awesome.
💯
