I remember visiting one of the animation studios, and on the wall were drawings from frustrated animators making fun of how hard the Secret Of Kells style was to animate. I also remember the storyboard animatic being about 15 minutes longer, but they cut a large portion of the film during production to meet the budget.

Thank you for these great tidbits of information! And your animatic memory absolutely meshes with what Tomm Moore wrote on the old production blog -- apparently, he and Twomey hacked the animatic down from almost 90 minutes. Based on what he wrote, it was both a budget thing and a concern that the film had grown bloated.

Also, thank you for shouting out Bakarmax! We've interacted with them a bit on Twitter. That CRED ad is full of life and personality -- so impressive, especially for such a small team. They're definitely a group to keep an eye on.
