Hi! I've been thinking nonstop about Dreaming Machine since I read this, I hope I get to see more of it some day. The designs and commentaries give you an idea of what it could've been but the music really brings it all to a new dimension, thanks for sharing!
And speaking of sharing, would you happen to have the Mononoke Hime documentary somewhere? The few copies I've found online don't ship to my country and the only torrent link I found is no longer working x.x
That's amazing to hear, Ana! We've been in the same situation -- the team can't stop talking about Dreaming Machine since we learned all this about it!
As for the doc, it's unfortunately hard to get your hands on. If you're willing to put up with horrific video quality, the streaming site Niconico (basically the Japanese YouTube) has a version with shaky English subtitles from 2008. It's uploaded in 13 parts -- the uploader put a link to the next part in each video description -- and it includes the bulk of the documentary: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm4254047
On top of that, How Princess Mononoke Was Born is still sold officially on DVD in good quality, shipped internationally from Amazon Japan (but without subtitles of any kind):
Our hope is that the documentary one day gets a proper localization outside Japan. We're going to knock on some doors ourselves and see if there's anything we can do to help that process along. So, we'll see!
26-minutes of pure gold no doubt! Wow, imagine where that reel is now? Like, is it in a vault? Is it one persons duty to protect that reel? Someone should make a manga on a character who is protecting the 26-minute reel and trying to get the film complete.
Thanks for continuing the Kon story and sharing How Princess Mononoke Was Born. Def diving into that this weekend. Very pumped to see what drops next!!! -dar
Great article. Thank you for sharing. I will search for the Mononoke documentary as well (I had no idea one was made). :) Thanks again.
So glad you enjoyed it! And we hope you're able to track down the doc -- it's really special.

Thank you, Darieus! And, yeah, hopefully the surviving footage is being kept safe -- imagine if it was lost for some reason? Scary to think!
