I love that you have put the spotlight on Errol Le Cain I loved his books as a child long before I began working in animation. I would spend hours poring over the pages, I collect them now and still do.
I loved the "cobbled" together version of Thief and the Cobbler that I saw once, and now I know whose art was behind much of it. Thank you for sharing his beautiful work.
It was really special to have the opportunity to create this article -- all gratitude to Daniel for turning us onto a subject we never would've thought to explore otherwise. It's been great to share Le Cain's art with more people!
So wonderful to see more about Le Cain! I grew up with his Cinderella book and was always enamoured with it. I used to think he was a Golden Age illustrator and was shocked to find out in the past year that he was more mid-century. This was a super interesting read, thank you !
Ah, that's so cool to hear! More than happy to share his story. Several people who fondly remember his work have reached out since we published this and it's been really awesome to see.
With the release of Across the Spiderverse, Nimona, How Do You Live, and the upcoming Earnest and Celestine, this year is shaping up to one of the greatest years for theatrical animation.
Fantastic article, thank you so much to both you and the researcher for all the work it must have taken! It seems like there is always more to find out about Williams and his studio, and Le Cain is a fascinating figure who I'm glad to know more about.
Thank you!! It definitely took a lot of effort, both on Daniel's part and ours. Very few issues of our newsletter have consumed this much time, and there were discoveries being made almost up to the last minute. Glad we could bring you more of the story of this wonderful artist.
Looks like a lot of inspiration came from the artwork you find in the Persian Epic, Shahnameh. Curious if he was a fan. The borders and flatness are almost identical.

Omg I love him. No one else gives him a shout out. Not surprised you’re doing so well.
Haha, thank you -- it's great to know you're familiar with his work already! It's a small but dedicated group.
It would be. A bit different I suppose.
This was excellent! Thank you so much for all the work you put into this (and really every) post.
So happy you enjoyed it! We really appreciate the kind words.

It would absolutely make sense if he was familiar with it -- Persian miniatures were a big inspiration on some of his work!
