Cubes - so glad to have seen it. Thankyou. It feels very similar to the masterful Dudok films. I have to admit I am a complete sucker for this kind of work.
Very interesting article, thank you! When I’ll be not happy about my artworks or projects, I’ll remember that even Oscar-winning animators have their doubts about their work. I happy to know thou that he found his way after the Oscar story. Hope he is happy now with what he is doing.
Glad you liked it! Once we found out about his struggles over this film, we felt it was a really valuable story to share. There are so many things to learn from it. Thanks so much for reading!
I remember watching House of Small Cubes months ago when it was in my YouTube feed. I didn't know it was the only anime short film that won an Oscar however, so I'm delighted to learn more about it.
It's reassuring to know that YouTube's algorithm is still showing it to people, despite how old it is. Glad we could bring you more of the film's history. We love shining a light on Japan's indie animation scene -- now that we've written about Small Cubes, Tortov Roddle and Koji Yamamura's Mt. Head and A Country Doctor, that's most of the work that got us into Japanese indie animation in the first place!
So glad to see more Japanese animation here! I was surprised when I first watched this one that it was Japanese since it’s so European styled (and that being a factor in winning the Oscar’s might be a topic for another email) so it was glad to know more about the story behind the short. If you haven’t done it yet, I’d love to see more newsletters on Oscar’s shorts (winners and not) starting with Boy and the World from Brazil.
Thank you for the suggestions! Boy and the World is one we've been seriously planning to cover -- we're hoping to explore it in the next month or two. Glad you enjoyed this issue.
This is a lovely read. I will be sure to share with others. Thank you
Thank you for the kind words! So happy to know that the piece resonated.

Happy to share it! We really need to see more of Dudok's work ourselves. Thanks for the added motivation to check out his films.
